The importance of someone to lean on

Whether it’s a best friend, a husband, a cousin, a sister, a mother or a practitioner you trust, having someone to lean on is one of the most important parts of this journey of ours. What’s happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, excitement without someone to share it with?

After losing my favourite ND in May I’ve been struggling to find a new practitioner to connect with. It’s definitely not an easy thing to find. It’s rare to find someone that specializes in fertility and shares the same enthusiasm for what you’re going through. I think it’s important to not only have a practitioner ( if you can ) as well as your partner/best friend/person to depend on. Being able to come home and talk through all of the craziness that you’re experiencing and feeling is so important to the letting go and moving on process. If we hold onto everything in our own body we risk the chance of letting all that negative energy stay right where it is, possibly making us sick, instead of helping it move out of the body.

Like I’ve mentioned before I’ve seen a number of different practitioners – Zen Shiatsu therapists, naturopaths, acupuncturists, TCM doctors, herbalists, MD’s, fertility specialists – all which offer a completely different approach to what’s going on. Some ask the same questions, others ask questions that seem completely random ( which you later find out are not random at all!). Regardless of what they’re asking, how do you feel when you’re with them? Do you feel like you can let it all go or are you holding certain things back? I have noticed for myself in the past that with certain doctors, I chose not to share certain things on purpose. And if I’m being honest with myself, I don’t think this should be the case. If this person is going to be helping you through such a huge emotional and physical journey, you want them to be on your side. You want them to know as much as they can so they can use all of their own knowledge to help you.

When I would go into my ND’s office most Saturday mornings I knew I was in great hands. I always had something to share or a question to ask, and she always listened and gave me advice. She encouraged me and monitored me, she gave me a hug when we had progress and motivated me when I was feeling frustrated. Not only was I getting weekly acupuncture and hydrotherapy treatments but I was letting go of all the stuff that had built up in the weeks between our appointments. It was like it’s own kind of therapy. I would genuinely leave feeling lighter, happier and more positive about what I was doing and how I was choosing to do it.

It’s no wonder that when she graduated and moved out of the country that I stopped getting my cycles regularly again. It made me realize that just getting acupuncture, or just doing one thing isn’t the only part of the healing journey. It’s how it all works together – the physical and the mental, the mind and the body- that start to heal and balance our bodies together.

I’ve been searching and looking for the right person and I think I may have just found her. In just one session I felt more relaxed and open than I have in a long time and that reminded me of the importance of someone to lean on. Because a best friend, a husband, a practitioner, whoever that person may be, they’re so important to your wellbeing. Letting go of your own stuff, focusing on yourself once a week and seeking help is part of staying healthy and keeping your body in balance. It allows you to welcome whatever goodness you create to fill the spaces of what you’ve just let go of.
